I am Raffan, and I am deeply passionate about assisting your child in their educational journey. Recently, I returned from a year in Paris, where I honed my teaching skills by imparting English knowledge to young minds through the engaging mediums of Art and Music.
I’ve been at Lightup Tutoring for over two years, during which I have had the privilege of working with remarkable students – my teaching career started 2 years prior to working with Lightup. My primary aim is to instil a profound appreciation for the subject in all of my students. I aspire to create an environment where my pupils feel not only comfortable but also supported, where they can freely ask questions and receive comprehensive answers tailored to their individual needs.

Tutoring Experience:
I have been tutoring for 2 years in a range of subjects for a variety of ages. I have experience tutoring English, Maths, Science and Geography up to GCSE level, but I have also assisted with English A-Level Coursework. Throughout my time tutoring I have worked with students of all abilities, including those with special educational needs such as dyslexia or ADHD. Alongside face-to-face tutoring, I have been a contributor to Lightup Tutoring’s GCSE English Hub, creating a range of resources including Grade 9 analysis documents and essays to assist students with their independent work.
My Approach to Tutoring:
My main goal with each session is to make my students feel as comfortable as possible, I’m well aware that they are under a lot of pressure at school and often this can be a source of anxiety, making them feel less confident in their abilities, particularly in an exam setting. I aim to create an environment in which the students feel they can ask questions and are not scared of making mistakes as working through previous errors and correcting them is often the best way of committing something to memory! My passion for tutoring has developed greatly over the past two years as I have seen many students gain so much more confidence and it is genuinely lovely to see when students are proud of their progress and achievements.

I find that schools often lose sight of the fact that every pupil has a unique way of learning, and they implement a ‘one size fits all’ approach. I strongly disagree with this, and believe that each student should be taught in a way that will enable them to get the best grade possible. I use this philosophy when teaching, and will always strive to make sure my lessons are as conducive to the student’s learning style as possible.
I also notice that there is more of a focus on memorising facts, and less about actually understanding the subject material. I do not agree with this, and will always make sure my pupils understand the lesson completely, before moving on. With over a year of teaching experience, I always endeavour to make my lessons as interesting as possible, and frame the content in a way that the student would find engaging. This has resulted in my students jumping up multiple grades in a short time frame!

I am a GCSE English tutor after having achieved 2 9s in language and literature myself. Having studied essay based subjects from a range of disciplines, including A Levels and also within my degree, I have extensive background knowledge in being able to construct high level essays.
I have been tutoring and teaching for over 7 years, working with all ages between 4-18 years old. After completing my Gujarati GCSE in Year 8 I started teaching classrooms of children the language. I have also tutored English, Maths and Science to a range of different ages. Along with this, I have just recently completed my TEFL (teaching English as a foreign language) qualification in Thailand.
These encounters mean I have come across a diverse range of pupils, including learning difficulties, special needs and refugees. My own personal achievements of A* in GCSE Maths and further Maths with the addition of an A grade in A-Level Maths illustrates that I have a thorough grasp of the Maths curriculum and am aware it’s a particular subject in which many students struggle. My A/B grade in English and Literature at GCSE and experience of writing essays in A levels and degree in Zoology have given me a wide knowledge of the concepts of the skills of the English language. A culmination of my own thorough knowledge on both subjects, paired with the experience I have, means that I am able to not only teach the concepts in a detailed and comprehensive manner, but find methods and tools to help make this process easier for each of my individual students.
In my most recent achievements is one of my students going from a predicted grade 4 to an award of 6 in his GCSEs in 2023. A demonstration of my patience, resilience, and perseverance as this was a subject this student found particularly difficult. I have a fun, engaging approach to teaching, whilst providing guidance and encouragement along the way. I think it is important that everyone is given the opportunity to learn at their own pace and take the time to understand areas they are having particular difficulty with. I
break topics down into small, manageable chunks and build on them at the speed that the student is comfortable with. This enables them to be challenged, whilst stimulating thinking. I encourage questions as a positive aid to promoting a deeper understanding.
